Dave Boyle was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a piano playing father and a clarinet playing mother. Rather than travel the typical road to impress the ladies as a Hawaiian (e.g. surfing), Dave chose to play guitar starting in 1980.
Dave's first recording session was in 1981 and encouraged him to enroll in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1983. While at Berklee, Dave met a kindred soul in Dan Rothchild (son of legendary Doors producer, Paul Rothchild). The two struck up an immediate friendship and would eventually become roomates in Los Angeles.
Dave played in many bands while living in Los Angeles, but it was recording that intrigued him the most. Dan set up his studio (16 tracks) in their dinning room and would eventually have his first success producing Better Than Ezra's debut record (which would eventually go double platinum). While Dan's career took off as a side musician/engineer (Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Tonic) Dave dug in deeper into recording his own music and other bands.
"My career began on a Fostex 4 track cassette machine", laughs Dave upon recollection. He would eventually move up to an 8 track (1987), then 16 track (1988), to 24 track ADAT's (1997), and then migrating to Pro-Tools (2000).

Vital experience in the realities of the record business were provided with a 3 year stint working for Dreamworks Publishing where Dave edited singles for radio and the internet for artists such as Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm, Jimmy Eat World, Powerman 5000, and Cooler Kids.
Building his first studio in his apartment in 1994 (8 track ADAT's) provided the credo that Dave lives by as an engineer today: "To me, it's all about good microphones and good mic pre's."
Studio 212 began in Dave's first home bought in LA, building the 24 track ADAT facility in the guest house on the property. After migrating to Pro-Tools in 2000 Dave "hasn't looked back once".
Continuing on the subject of Pro-Tools, "Honestly, 2" tape is great, but those machines are very expensive and need service regularly. In my perfect world, I would love to own one, but service and tape costs don't make it cost effective for my studio and what I am trying to accomplish. I'm trying to keep my fees low, so the financially struggling band can get a quality recording."
Studio 212 is a great facility for regional Northwest bands or any band wishing to record in the gorgeous countryside of Northwestern Oregon.
